Driver Vision Enhancement and IR Illumination for Military Vehicles

Military and security vehicles operate at night. Driver vision enhancement (DVE) gives vehicle crews the ability to navigate, see obstacles and keep situational awareness in low-light and no-light conditions – a requirement that has driven the adoption of thermal imaging, image intensification and EO/IR sensors across land vehicle platforms.

Those sensors perform to their specifications, but at night their output depends on the illumination available. Wiseled designs vehicle IR illumination for driver vision enhancement – built around the RAVEN IR illuminator – that extends the operational envelope of the cameras and night vision goggles already in service.

Why does driver vision enhancement need active IR illumination?

A driver vision enhancement system gives vehicle crews navigation capability and situational awareness where unaided vision fails. Thermal imaging handles passive detection in darkness. For the optical channel – near-IR cameras and night vision goggles (NVG) – to contribute meaningfully to driver vision enhancement in low-light and no-light conditions, active near-infrared illumination is required.

The RAVEN IR illuminator is designed specifically for DVE integration. Its precision optics produce a squared illumination pattern matched to standard camera and NVG sensor aspect ratios – the beam geometry aligns with the sensor’s field of view, maximising usable irradiance on target and eliminating the edge falloff and wasted output that circular-beam illuminators produce outside the sensor coverage area.

The result is a stable, uniform night image that supports navigation and situational awareness at operational speeds. The RAVEN has been selected by multiple OEMs as the infrared illuminator of choice for their vehicle driver vision enhancement programmes. See how it is configured in the DVE-01 driver vision enhancement system.

How does Wiseled support vehicle OEM integration?

Wiseled works directly with platform OEMs and vehicle programme teams on driver vision enhancement and illumination requirements, from initial interface definition through to qualified system delivery. Products are designed for integration from the outset – standardised connectors, documented interfaces, flexible control architectures and published technical data packages reduce programme risk and integration lead time.

Custom configurations are available for programmes where standard products require adaptation. Wavelength options, control interface variants and mechanical configurations can be specified to match platform requirements. Products are delivered under Wiseled’s quality and operational excellence framework, and Wiseled supports offset and industrial cooperation on national vehicle programmes.

For more inquiries

What is driver vision enhancement (DVE)?

Driver vision enhancement improves a vehicle driver’s view of the route in darkness, using sensors such as thermal cameras, image intensifiers and night vision goggles, supported by active infrared illumination where ambient light is insufficient.

Why add IR illumination to a DVE system?

Night vision goggles and near-IR cameras depend on available light. In overcast, moonless or low-contrast conditions their image degrades. Controlled IR illumination restores contrast on the road surface, track edges and terrain.

Does Wiseled IR illumination work with existing NVG and cameras?

Yes. The RAVEN pattern is matched to standard camera and NVG sensor aspect ratios, and is available at 850 nm, 940 nm and 1550 nm to suit the sensor in use. No goggle replacement is required.

Can illumination be adapted to a specific vehicle programme?

Yes. Wavelength, control interface and mechanical configuration can be specified to match the platform. Wiseled works with OEMs from interface definition to qualified delivery.

Which standards does the RAVEN IR illuminator meet?

RAVEN is designed to MIL-STD-461G, MIL-STD-810H and MIL-STD-1275E and uses MIL-DTL-38999 connectors. Technical documentation is available on request.
