DVE-01Driver Vision Enhancement System

The DVE-01 is a driver vision enhancement system for NVG-based night driving: controlled infrared illumination from the RAVEN IR illuminator, viewed through the driver’s existing night vision goggles.

Definition

What is a driver vision enhancement system?

A driver vision enhancement system (DVE) improves the driver’s view of the route in darkness. The DVE-01 does this with controlled infrared illumination from a front-mounted RAVEN IR illuminator, viewed through helmet-mounted night vision goggles (NVG).

The driver sees the road surface, track edges and surrounding terrain in IR. The DVE-01 driver vision enhancement system supplements goggles already in service. No goggle replacement is required. It is part of Wiseled’s range of vehicle systems and driver vision enhancement solutions.

Operational challenge

Why does NVG-based night driving need supplementary IR illumination?

NVG depend on ambient light. In overcast, moonless or low-contrast conditions, image intensifier output degrades. The driver loses ground texture, and obstacles, ruts and track edges become harder to distinguish.

Supplementary IR illumination restores contrast, provided the pattern is controlled. Hotspots, edge falloff and stray light reduce image quality, which is why a driver vision enhancement system needs a defined beam pattern rather than a general-purpose IR lamp.

System configuration

How does the DVE-01 light the route?

In the DVE-01 driver vision enhancement system, RAVEN is mounted on the front bumper, centre, and lights the route ahead in infrared. The driver picks the result up through helmet-mounted NVG.

Driver view

How does supplementary IR change the NVG image?

Same goggles, same route. The RAVEN pattern is matched to standard sensor aspect ratios, which limits edge falloff and stray light. With supplementary IR the driver sees:

  • Road surface texture
  • Track edges and ruts
  • Terrain either side of the route

Operator needs

Which operator needs does the DVE-01 driver vision enhancement system address?

Night driving

Route illumination without white light

The DVE-01 lights the route in infrared only. For white-light search and illumination on the same vehicle, see the FALCON tactical searchlight.Verify signature claim

Image quality

Poor NVG image in low ambient light

A rectangular 80° × 30° IR pattern gives a more even image across the field of view.

Retrofit

Existing vehicles and goggles

The system works with NVG already in service. No goggle replacement is required.

Space and power

Limited room and supply on light vehicles

600 g, 100 × 67 × 48 mm. 18–32 V input, 25 W nominal, below 3 W in standby.

Sensors

Sensor-specific requirements

Wavelength options of 850, 940 and 1550 nm match the sensor and the signature requirement.

Integration

Fitting into existing vehicle systems

MIL-DTL-38999 connectors and a defined power interface reduce integration effort. Wiseled has integrated illumination on vehicle platforms before, for example in the Xtruder CROW MK2 project with Kongsberg.

Wavelength options

Which wavelengths are available?

Three options: 850 nm, 940 nm and 1550 nm. The choice depends on the sensor in use and the signature requirement of the platform.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the DVE-01 driver vision enhancement system?

The DVE-01 is a driver vision enhancement system from Wiseled that lights the route ahead in infrared with a front-mounted RAVEN IR illuminator, so drivers using night vision goggles see the road surface, track edges and terrain in darkness.

Does the DVE-01 replace night vision goggles?

No. It supplements existing NVG with controlled IR illumination.

Does the DVE-01 use white light?

No. Output is infrared only.

Which wavelengths can the DVE-01 use?

850 nm, 940 nm and 1550 nm. 850 nm suits image intensifier NVG, 940 nm suits near-IR cameras and 1550 nm is for SWIR sensors only.

Can wavelength and control functions be adapted?

Yes. Wiseled’s integration-first approach allows wavelength, control functions and mounting to be adapted to the host platform.

Which connectors and power does it use?

MIL-DTL-38999 connectors. Input voltage 18–32 V, 25 W nominal and below 3 W in standby.
